FREDERICK, MD – Nov. 14, 2024: The William L. Bruckart III Scholarship Fund was established by Margaret E. Bruckart to provide scholarships to graduating seniors who are pursuing an education in science, arts or agriculture. This becomes one of more than 815 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

William “Bill” Bruckart was an internationally recognized USDA research plant pathologist specializing in biocontrol of weeds. He traveled the world and was well respected by his colleagues for his groundbreaking work. Bill was an adjunct professor in the Biology Department at Hood College and was a dedicated mentor to many high school, college, and graduate students throughout his career, inspiring them towards careers in plant science.

According to his family, his passions reached far beyond his professional work – he “was a renaissance man in every respect.” Bill loved music and played classical guitar and sang in many ensembles over the years. He was active at Brook Hill United Methodist Church and could often be found playing on church softball and basketball teams.

“His kindness, encouragement, and hugs were well known, as were his bowties and wingtips which he wore whenever the occasion presented itself,” Bill’s daughter, Abigail Owens, said. “A gentleman and friend to all, Bill loved people indiscriminately.”
