Founded by Mark and Frances Draper and their daughter Sadie Wiles in honor of their mother and grandmother for Middletown High School graduates studying education.
Virginia Draper was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother and a well-known educator. Her career with Frederick County Public Schools spanned more than 40 years, from 1939 until 1980, teaching at schools in Sabillasville, Wolfsville, Middletown, and Black’s School. She was also an author and historian, eventually writing a total of 11 books that captured stories and history of Wolfsville, Maryland and the surrounding area as a way to keep the history alive about the hills that she loved and called home. Her books included The Smoke Still Rises, The Goose and the Eagle, Bits and Pieces of Daisy May’s Scrapbook, Dandelions, Mushrooms, and Moss-covered Stones, Poetry from the Hills, and more.
