New Fund Supports Youth Baseball and Softball

Man in baseball hatFREDERICK, MD – March 12, 2025: Sarah Hofman established The Jeremy Magers Memorial Baseball and Softball Fund in memory of her fiancé to provide grants to support baseball and softball programs in Frederick County. This becomes one of more than 818 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Jeremy loved baseball, and whether he was playing or coaching, the sport played a role in each phase of his life. He was on the baseball team at Allegany College of Maryland (formerly Allegany Community College), where he competed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (JUCO) World Series as a catcher. He earned his associate’s degree in Kinesiology and continued his education at Frostburg State University. He continued his baseball career with semi-pro team the Brunswick Orioles and was eventually drafted by the Texas Rangers.

Following his baseball career, Jeremy returned home and joined the Ft. George Meade Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Captain of Truck 45, a role he held at the time of his passing. Throughout his distinguished career, Jeremy earned numerous accolades, including being named the 2008 United States Army/DLA Firefighter of the Year. He continued his love for baseball by volunteering as commissioner of the Linganore Oakdale Urbana Youth Athletic Association (LOUYAA) and founded In the Dirt Baseball to help develop catchers. He trained youths in the Special Olympics and he coached several tournament softball teams.

“He has made such a huge impact on all the children he has coached over the years,” Sarah said. “He loved helping children of all ages and took great pride in watching them grow in the sport of baseball and softball.”

As a leader in grant and scholarship funding, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has infused more than $102 million into the community since 1986.
