New Fund Honors a Legacy of Justice, Mercy, and Humility

Daviel Davis, MD and Rev. Suzanne Adele Schmidt, Ph.D.FREDERICK, MD – June 5, 2025: Dr. Daniel Davis and the Rev. Suzanne Adele Schmidt, Ph.D., established The Micah 6:8 Fund to support a variety of nonprofit organizations whose missions focus on human rights, educational access, women’s reproductive rights, food insecurity, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, and support for aging populations. This becomes one of more than 818 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Micah 6:8 is a verse in the Bible that reflects on what God requires of humanity: to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. Dan, a retired physician, and Suzanne, a retired United Church of Christ clergy, said this fund represents their commitment to justice, mercy and humility. They said their faith compels them to take action.

The couple says that through their church service, they have witnessed firsthand the deep and varied injustices that exist. Their vision for this fund is to address those injustices, raise awareness, and inspire others to offer a hand to those whose basic needs remain unmet.

“Generosity and hospitality run deep in our family,” the couple said. Suzanne’s parents, Richard and Alice Schmidt, were “shining examples of joyful giving,” and Dan’s parents, Dr. Clarence and Beatrice Davis, were proponents and supporters of higher education.

“We are Micah 6:8 people,” the couple said. “As we live our lives and even after we depart this world, we want our legacy to reflect our unwavering commitment to justice, mercy, and humility. The organizations we choose to support embody these values, working to create a more just and compassionate world.”

As a leader in grant and scholarship funding, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has infused more than $102 million into the community since 1986.
