This fund providing scholarships to Catoctin High School students honors a middle school social studies teacher and a high school art teacher who were married for 52 years.
FREDERICK, MD – Feb. 24, 2025: The Harold and Rebecca Shorb Memorial Fund was established by several close relatives to provide scholarships to Catoctin High School students who are pursuing a degree in fine arts or a closely related visual arts field. This becomes one of more than 815 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
Harold and Rebecca, married for 52 years, both spent their careers teaching in Frederick County Public Schools. Harold retired from West Frederick Middle School where he was an eighth-grade social studies teacher and Rebecca, who also went by “Becky,” spent much of her 28-year career teaching art at Catoctin High School. When the couple retired in the late 90’s, they realized their dream of buying a cottage in Maine where they resided for six months each year.
Becky was involved with many art organizations and projects in both Maine and Pennsylvania, where the couple lived the other half of the year. She was active with her local historical society and her church. Harold was passionate about cooking, art, antiques and cats. He was known for his incredible memory of people and history.
“Several devoted cousins came together to create this fund to honor the legacy of Harold and Becky, who each impacted so many lives as teachers, and who inspired those around them to embrace the arts and theater,” said Brenda Nowell, a close relative of the couple.
As a leader in grant and scholarship funding, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has infused more than $102 million into the community since 1986.
