Frances R. Darner Scholarship Fund

Founded by Merle L. and R. Rebecca Guyton for students demonstrating community commitment through volunteerism, extra-curricular activities and participation in character-building programs.

Frances Darner spent her life hoping to make someone else’s journey a little easier, and in her honor and memory, Mr. and Mrs. Merle Guyton created the fund to keep her legacy of a giving spirit and community involvement alive.

A native of Middletown, Maryland, Miss Darner was a devoted member of Christ Reformed Church in Middletown and was employed at the Potomac Edison Company in Frederick for 46 years. She was a life-long member of the Middletown Valley Grange where she was secretary and was also active in the county, state, and national Grange. ‘she was held in highest regard by all of her associates.” says Mrs. Guyton of her cousin Frances.

Thomas R. and Virginia T. Dashiell Memorial Fund

Founded by Mrs. Dashiell’s estate plans to support Frederick Health Hospital and Calvary United Methodist Church.

During their lifetimes, the late Virginia T. and Thomas R. Dashiell were dedicated to the Frederick community. For over 50 years they lived in Frederick raising their two children, Thomas M. Dashiell and Tina Dashiell Roth. They felt strongly that the family-friendly environment and the organizations the community provided would guarantee a firm foundation for their children to grow and thrive. Active members of Calvary United Methodist Church, they remained in Frederick even after Mr. Dashiell began working in Washington, DC during the latter part of his career. Sadly, Mr. Dashiell passed away in 1998 after a courageous battle with leukemia, yet Mrs. Dashiell remained grateful for the many services of Frederick Health Hospital during his illness. When her health began to decline, Mrs. Dashiell decided to move closer to her children, residing in Virginia. Her love of Frederick and desire to give back did not end, however, when this kind, caring woman passed away. During her lifetime, she thoughtfully considered the long-term financial support of organizations important to her by making a gift through her estate plans to the Community Foundation. Because of her foresight and generosity, the Community Foundation established The Thomas R. and Virginia T. Dashiell Memorial Fund to provide additional financial support to Calvary United Methodist Church and Frederick Health Hospital.

Dr. LeRoy T. and Sandra J. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by Dr. LeRoy T. Davis with preference given to students majoring in nursing.

Sandra Davis was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and studied at Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. She continued her studies at the University of Maryland Nursing School. She moved to Frederick when she married LeRoy Davis, a man she met on a blind date. While her husband attended medical school, Mrs. Davis pursued her nursing career. When her husband started his medical practice, Mrs. Davis concentrated more on the home, raising their three children and community volunteer work. To honor the memory and legacy of his wife of 53 years, Dr. Davis turned to the Community Foundation to create The Sandra J. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund awards scholarships, with preference given to those majoring in nursing as Mrs. Davis had done.

Roger and Golda Delauter Memorial Fund

Founded by Timothy and Patricia O’Toole, in memory of Patricia’s parents, to support children with preference to programs for early childhood literacy.

Golda and Roger Delauter were members at Frederick Church of the Brethren, where Golda volunteered as a Sunday school teacher. Golda was a daycare provider when she retired at the age of 80. Her dedication to children and their love of learning motivated the O’Tooles to create the fund.

John Ryan Dennison Memorial Fund

The John Ryan Dennison Memorial Fund was created by the Dennison family and friends through The Community Foundation of Frederick County to support the design, construction and maintenance of a memorial project honoring Captain John Ryan Dennison and other Frederick County residents who have lost their lives in the wars on terrorism. This memorial will be dedicated to the men and women who voluntarily served and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The integrity of a life well-lived was inherent in all Ryan Dennison did. As a young man at Urbana High School, Ryan’s commitment to academic excellence and his dedication to making a difference in the lives of others were beaming examples to everyone. From academic distinction, to outstanding participation in sports, to his volunteer work with Big Brothers, Ryan was a positive role model. It was no surprise, then, when Ryan followed his family’s military tradition by attending West Point. As a 2004 West Point graduate, he proudly served The United States of America as a platoon leader and a member of Task Force Lightning. Simply put, Army Captain Ryan Dennison exemplified the West Point motto of Duty, Honor, and Country throughout his life. Tragically, Ryan’s bright future was cut short on November 15, 2006, when he died at the age of 24 courageously serving his country in Iraq. To honor Ryan’s memory, his family and friends established The John Ryan Dennison Memorial Fund to support the design, construction and maintenance of a memorial project honoring Captain John Ryan Dennison.
