John Jack Griffin Scholarship Fund

Founded by Earl Main for Frederick High School graduates, with a preference for students pursuing a degree in physical education at a postsecondary or graduate level.

John “Jack” Griffin is remembered as a great coach, mentor, and friend by countless alum of Frederick High School. His 30-year career with Frederick County Public Schools included time at Elm Street Junior High, West Frederick Junior High, and Frederick High School.

Jack was also a Frederick High School alumni, graduating in 1944. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore in 1948, he was awarded a full scholarship from the University of New York for basketball, baseball, and track, and graduated in 1953.

During his tenure with Frederick County Public Schools, Jack served as president of the Frederick County Physical Education Teachers Association (he was an active member for 45 years) and the State Physical Education Association. He also received the William R. Burdick Award from the State of Maryland for Outstanding Contributions to state and county programs.

Coach Griffin is also known for his international coaching and for founding the Frederick Track Club. Two athletes from the Club earned national and international recognition as world record holders: Debbie Thompson for the 60 year indoor dash, and Tammy Davis for indoor hurdles. He also mentored Ellyn Cornish who ran on the USA World XC Team, and Cheryl Poirier, who was a hurdler on the USA/USSR Team. The Club can boast six American records, along with many other successes.

Jack will never be forgotten, not only for his success as a coach, but also as a mentor to youth, and to many coaches who were better coaches because of his influence.

Esther E. Grinage Scholarship Fund

Founded through Marguerite Quinn’s bequest for students preferably studying education.

The Kindergarten Association of Frederick was formed in October 1937 to meet the needs of African-American families who wanted to enroll their children in preparation for elementary school, since public schools did not offer kindergarten classes. In 1949, the Kindergarten Association was renamed after longtime Frederick educator Esther E. Grinage. Mrs. Grinage died in 1947 after having taught in African-American elementary schools in Frederick for 35 years. Well-known Fredericktonian Marguerite Quinn named the Esther E. Grinage Kindergarten Association the beneficiary of her will, earmarking funds to build a new kindergarten school building. However, kindergarten classes were created for the first time in the public school system in 1973. The Esther E. Grinage Scholarship Fund was established instead through Mrs. Quinn’s bequest. To commemorate Ms. Grinage’s passion for teaching, the fund awards scholarships to candidates studying early childhood education.

Michael Grosh S.A.R. Fund

Frederick Mathias Michel’s enthusiasm for and affiliation with the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution inspired him to create The Michael Grosh S.A.R. Fund which will support the organization with scholarships and funding for patriotic activities. The fund will also support students attending Frederick Community College. Mr. Michel’s generous spirit will leave a legacy for years to come.

“Judge” William B. Gross Scholarship Fund

Founded through the estate of Anne-Lynn Gross for deserving students.

In memory and in honor of her father, Anne-Lynn Gross created this fund through her estate provisions. “Judge” Gross was known for positively impacting the lives of others while he served as District Court Commissioner in Frederick. His legacy will live on by providing scholarships to high school students pursuing post-secondary education.

“Judge” Gross was known for positively impacting the lives of others while he served as District Court Commissioner in Frederick. Similarly, the Frederick Rescue Mission assists individuals mend their lives. Established by his daughter, Anne-Lynn Gross, The “Judge” William B. Gross Fund supports the work of the Frederick Rescue Mission.

Gloria M. “Stretch” Grossnickle Memorial Fund

Founded by friend William H. Browning, Jr. to support the Harp Medical Center and its mission to provide medical services and healthcare education in Middletown Valley.

Middletown resident Gloria Grossnickle may have been petite, but her nickname ‘Stretch” was well deserved. When she and other Middletown residents realized the lack of a medical facility in their community was causing hardship for residents, they filled this need by founding the Dr. J. Elmer Harp Medical Center. Ms. Grossnickle played an important role in the Center’s establishment by serving as secretary on the Harp Medical Center’s Board. It was a position she would hold for over 25 years. Founded by long-time friend, William H. Browning Jr., The Gloria M. “Stretch” Grossnickle Memorial Fund supports the Harp Medical Center and its mission to provide medical services and healthcare education in Middletown Valley.

Grossnickle Family Scholarship Fund

Founded by Andrew Grossnickle for students studying agriculture, or those raised on a farm and pursuing post-secondary education.

The fund honors the memory of Larry J. Grossnickle who lived and farmed in Frederick County his entire life. Not only did he love farming, but he valued education. He was a graduate of Middletown High School, attended Bridgewater College, and graduated from University of Maryland with a degree in agriculture. He and his wife, Muriel, raised their three children on the family farm in Middletown. The Grossnickle Family Scholarship Fund was established by his son, Andrew Grossnickle, to benefit those studying agriculture, or those raised on a farm and pursuing post-secondary education.
