George E. Randall Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by wife Elizabeth Randall for Frederick County residents studying journalism and/or photography, preferably Catoctin High School graduates attending Frederick Community College.

George Randall was an accomplished Frederick journalist, dedicated to integrity in reporting and publishing a successful newspaper. He was president of Randall Family LLC, as well as editor and publisher of The Frederick News-Post, the last wholly family-owned daily newspaper in Maryland. After he graduated from Middletown High School, he received a bachelor’s degree in history from Lynchburg College in Virginia and earned his master’s degree in photojournalism. Later he completed his law degree and passed the Maryland Bar. He began his newspaper career even before he owned a car, working in the photography department at The Frederick News-Post and as a reporter for The Lynchburg News & Advance. His dream job was to run the paper his great-grandfather started. In December 1985, he was appointed vice president of Great Southern Printing and Manufacturing Co., the paper’s parent company at that time. Under his leadership, the newspaper published its first Sunday edition. Mr. Randall loved The Frederick News-Post and the Frederick community. He was supportive of many local charities. He served on the boards of The Community Foundation of Frederick County, the Frederick Community College Fund Inc., the Frederick Mutual Insurance Company, and the Record Street Home, among others. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick. Even with his busy schedule, Mr. Randall found time to raise polled Herefords on his farms in Rocky Ridge and Thurmont. His passions included hunting and gardening, and fishing in Alaska, Canada, Venezuela, and the Bahamas. An accomplished musician, he played piano, organ and clarinet. He was a very genial person and made friends easily. Elizabeth Randall turned to the Community Foundation to establish The George E. Randall Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of her husband of 27 years who died after battling a malignant brain tumor for 19 months. In keeping with George Randall’s own career path and passions, the Fund provides scholarships to Frederick County residents studying at the post-secondary level who are interested in journalism and/or photography. Preference is given to Catoctin High School graduates who wish to attend Frederick Community College.

George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by wife Freda Gilbert for Frederick County Public Schools graduates attending trade or technical schools.

A native of New Haven, Connecticut, George Wesley Gilbert worked as a mechanical engineer with the Department of the Navy in Carderock, Maryland. He served in World War II with the Army. After his discharge, he graduated from the Academy of Aeronautics in New York City at the top of his class. A professional mentor to many over the years, he often praised the practical, hands-on experience achieved through training at a trade or technical school. Mr. Gilbert and his wife Freda of 47 years lived in Kensington for 39 years before retiring to Frederick County. When Mr. Gilbert passed away, his wife established The George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund in his memory to award scholarships for graduates of Frederick County Public Schools who are continuing their education at trade or technical schools.

Georgia Marie Abdow Fund

Founded by Mark and Michele Abdow in memory of their daughter as a donor advised fund, with preference given to organizations providing services to individuals and their families experiencing substance use disorder.

Georgia was a 2020 graduate of American University, where she studied public relations and marketing, with a focus on social media content for the entertainment industry. The loss of their daughter led the Abdows to create this fund, with the hope it can help others combat the negative effects that substance use disorder has on families and their children.

Gina M. Cumberland Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by husband Michael Cumberland for students pursuing post-secondary education in Maryland.

A generous heart, a life full of laughter, and a blessing to everyone who knew her are just a few of the ways that family and friends described Gina Cumberland, who passed away in late June 2017. To honor and remember her, The Gina M. Cumberland Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by her husband, Michael D. Cumberland. Post-secondary scholarships will be provided to students attending an educational institution in Maryland, and who have demonstrated community service or involvement, creating a legacy that exemplifies the love and kindness that Mrs. Cumberland always had for others.
