Nicholas B. Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund

Founded by parents Darren and Mary Jarvis for Frederick, Urbana, or Tuscarora High Schools graduating seniors studying forestry, agriculture, land management, veterinary medicine, marine biology, early childhood education, history, science, and sports medicine.

Nicholas (Nick) B. Jarvis enjoyed playing baseball, football and basketball. A student at Carroll Manor Elementary School, he played on the Mudcats baseball team. In school, Nick was fascinated by Social Studies, eager to learn about Indians and the Civil War. He was also intrigued by Science and wrote a report once in which he shared that he wanted to become a Marine Biologist or pursue a career in forestry or with wildlife. When the nine-year old passed away, his parents, Darren and Mary Jarvis, established The Nicholas B. Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund to help others pursue the same dreams Nick had. The Fund provides scholarships to Frederick County residents who are graduating seniors from Frederick, Urbana and/or Tuscarora High Schools, with preference given to those students studying for careers in forestry, agriculture, land management, veterinary medicine, and marine biology, the subjects that fascinated Nick. Other areas of study that will be considered are early childhood education, history, science and sports medicine. The specific high schools benefiting from this fund reflect ties close to the family, Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis attended Frederick High School; Urbana High School was particularly supportive of the family during their time of loss; and Tuscarora High School is most likely the high school Nick would have attended.

Nicholas Talarico Paskowsky Memorial Fund

Founded by parents Jane Talarico and Michael Paskowsky for scholarships for Saint Mary’s College students studying abroad.

An honors student, Nicholas Talarico Paskowsky graduated from Frederick High School in 2002, where he lettered in football and track. He was a Dean’s List student at Saint Mary’s College of Maryland, majoring in history with plans of attending law school. He was scheduled to spend a semester abroad in Costa Rica to learn more about Central America and to improve his Spanish language skills when he passed away in August 2004, four months shy of his 21st birthday. Nicholas’ parents, Jane Marie Talarico and Michael Paul Paskowsky, established The Nicholas Talarico Paskowsky Memorial Fund to reflect the interests that defined their son. The fund awards annual scholarships to provide assistance to Saint Mary’s College of Maryland students to study abroad, particularly to Spanish-speaking countries.

Destinations visited by students receiving the grants from this fund include Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Thailand and China. Students typically live with native-speaking host families, attend classes, experience cultural activities, and complete an academic project. In addition to intensive language study, the students have engaged in a variety of intellectual pursuits. For example, a biology major worked on a sea turtle rescue project in Mexico. Jane and Michael believe international travel is an enriching and transformative experience: “It opens eyes and hearts to other perspectives. It breaks down stereotypes and fosters an appreciation of other world views.”

Nicholas Vrenios Memorial Fund

Founded by parents Anastasios and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Vrenios for grants and scholarships supporting music and the performing arts.

Nicholas Vrenios was a 20-year-old student at Syracuse University majoring in photography with hopes of pursuing a career in photojournalism. In addition to his passion for photography, Nicholas enjoyed swimming, skateboarding and was an accomplished guitarist, taking his guitar everywhere, including with him during his time studying abroad. When traveling home after a year in Europe, his life was claimed by the ill-fated Pam Am Flight 103 that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland in December 1988. To honor his legacy and love for music, his parents Anastasios N. Vrenios and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Vrenios established The Nicholas Vrenios Memorial Fund to support their favorite charitable causes in their son’s memory. Preference will be given to awarding grants and scholarships from the fund to support singers and projects related to singing. Through this Fund in his name, Nicholas” memory lives on by helping other young people pursue their passion for music.
