Frederick Keys Care Fund

Founded by the Frederick Keys in memory of Joel A. Stephens for grants to nonprofits serving children coping with illness, personal loss and/or disabilities.

The Frederick Keys Care Fund, established by the Frederick Keys, honors the memory of Joel Stephens, a minor league outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles who succumbed to colon cancer in 1998 at the age of 22. While undergoing treatment, Joel attempted a return to baseball by playing with the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. Joel’s love for children, particularly those with health-related issues, disabilities, difficult home situations, or suffering a loss, inspired the creation of this memorial fund. The Fund awards grants to nonprofit organizations serving Frederick County youth or young adults 22 years of age and younger or religious organizations in need of funding for non-sectarian activities benefiting youth activities. While Joel’s life ended too soon this fund will have a positive impact on the lives of others for generations to come.

Established by Frederick Woman’s Civic Club, the fund provides grants to nonprofits and scholarships to deserving students. The Frederick Woman’s Civic Club is a volunteer, nonpartisan, nondenominational organization providing service to the community and the world-at-large. Through its community service projects, it continues to be a driving force for a better, safer, and more inclusive community for all Frederick County residents.

Frederick Arts Council Thelma Gross Music Scholarship Fund

Founded by its board of directors for music scholarships.

Thelma Gross was a graceful woman of passion and art. “To me, nature and rhythm have become synonymous. If there is rhythm in all these natural things, how much should there be in our lives, our spirits?” she once wrote. Mrs. Gross, wife of “Judge” William B. Gross, was a teacher, singer and mother. She taught at both the Maryland School for the Deaf and Brunswick Elementary School. She was a teacher for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Monday Morning Musical Foundation, an active organization in the 1940s. In her free time, she enjoyed the art of writing poetry, singing and playing the piano. In her honor and memory, her daughter Anne-Lynn Gross, herself a talented singer, collaborated with the Frederick Arts Council and the Community Foundation to establish The Frederick Arts Council Thelma Gross Music Scholarship Fund. The fund distributes music scholarships.
